Here’s how I know I was supposed to have kids:
I am totally unable to cook for only two people.
Even though I was one person for a long time and my family has been two for over a decade, I still cook for a family of five. There are always leftovers in my fridge and I often turn the remnants of one meal into something different.
Maybe it’s because I grew up in a family of five and learned to cook for five that I can’t seem to downsize my portions. Or maybe there’s just a part of me that’s pure old-fashioned mother and wants to feed everyone. “Eat, eat! How are you going to grow big if you don’t eat?”
Well, Mr. Fab and I are growing big on my cooking, and now that my mother is visiting, I’ll be fattening her up to.
Do you have a maternal instinct that you can’t seem to shake off?

I sway side to side when I’m waiting in line… like I’m holding a baby on my hip. So many people through out the years have said to me, “After having children on my hip, I sway back and forth too… how many did you have?” – Of course my answer is always none. I do this perhaps because I was 16 when my youngest sister was born and I held her quite a bit, or perhaps because I’m a dancer, I don’t really know. I see mothers holding their children and swaying side to side all the time and I do think that it is strange that I do the same thing. — Kristine

I work with dogs and I have an embarassing habit of rocking dogs…like they’re babies. I once puppy sat a bulldog puppy and that’s about as close to a human baby feel as any dog will get and I used to hold her and rock her (until she managed to squirm away). I do it at my grooming job now too. Embarassing.

I have 4 brothers. I always want to cook big meals when they visit and find myself doing a lot of the things my mother did. I also love to bake but it’s not much fun when you live alone.

Like Brigid, it’s baking for me. Unfortunately, I’m diabetic, and I have only been able to find one book on small batch baking. When I do bake, we have desserts for a week because I can’t indulge too much. I do the bulk of the desserts and treats for our family Christmas; this year I made Chocolate macarons, creme caramel with coconut milk and lime, salted caramel cupcakes, apple crisp, and peanut butter tiger candy. There weren’t too many leftovers, so I must be doing something right.

For me, I have way too many toys in our house. I used to buy them for my nieces and nephews but they are now older and don’t come over except on holidays. It’s mostly trains, slot cars, a dollhouse I’m building, comic book related stuff. Sometimes i think it makes me look weird.

I’m with you – I can’t cook for two. And will never be able to. We’ve been together 30 years (gulp!) and I still can’t cook for two. I love doing stir-fry veges, and find it impossible to do half a carrot, or half a zucchini, so always end up having heaps of vegetables. Of course, that would be fine if I cut back on the protein and carbs …
