This week, April 24-30, is National Infertility Awareness Week.
1 in 8 women and men are diagnosed with infertility. RESOLVE and the infertility community are busting myths and telling truths about the most popular public myths and misconceptions about the disease of infertility and the different ways people build their families.
Check out the website for ways to get involved and get this important conversation going.
I’ll be posting on related topics all week, but here’s my question to you:
If you’ve dealt with infertility, what’s the one thing you want people to know?
It’s important that we talk about this so that we can start blasting some of those misconceptions about this disease.

That perhaps the most hurtful thing anyone can say to you is “It must be God’s will” or “God has a plan”. That implies that God does not find me worthy to be a mother. And I have to think He does find women who murder their babies, abuse their babies, etc are worthy?

Yes, this one doesn’t sit well with me either. I think people find it easier to think there’s a master plan for everything rather than acknowledge that bad things happen to good people and vice versa. So sorry.
Sue says
If I’m OK with my infertility, then you should be too. Don’t tell me not to give up, suggest “cures”, or tell me about other peoples’ success stories. It has taken a lot of time and courage to get to this place of acceptance so please respect that.
Julie says
Yes, this! I couldn’t agree more.
lmanterfield says
Ditto.

Please respect my privacy and don’t assume it is ok to ask everyone you meet about when they are going to get pregnant/if they have kids/why they don’t have kids etc… I realize that these are common conversations but when dealing with infertility/multiple losses, it really hurts.
lmanterfield says
It’s odd how such a private thing becomes everyone’s business. Imagine asking someone how much money they had in the bank or asking an overweight person when they’re going to go on a diet. You wouldn’t, because it’s rude, but it’s perfectly ok to pry into someone’s reproductive details. Sigh.
