Celebrity Babies

August 30, 2010

I don’t make a point of following celebrity news, but it somehow manages to find me anyway. I must say that I’m pleased with the recent slew of celebrity sex tapes because they’re trumping the usual news about celebrity baby. Even so, you can’t make it through the grocery store line without somebody’s pregnant belly poking at you from the cover of a magazine.

Ever since Demi Moore posed naked and pregnant for Vanity Fair, celebrity pregnancy and motherhood have gone from taboo to acceptable, to the mess we have today, where pregnancy bumps and new babies are the latest celebrity accessories. Everybody’s doing it and there’s no escaping the news. The magazine racks at the grocery stores are covered with a who’s who of maternity. One magazine has a regular Bump Watch feature, and People magazine’s online version has an entire page dedicated to celebrity baby news. As if the gossip mags aren’t already doing their best to make us feel inadequate because our hair isn’t smooth, our waists aren’t tiny, and our clothes aren’t chic, now apparently we’re not perfect if we don’t have the most adorable baby in tow.

Well, I’m not buying it. Not until one of these celebrities comes clean about the difficulty she had conceiving with her size 0 body, or that motherhood isn’t just some pretty thing that comes with a designer nursery and a new set of cute clothes.

How about the over-40 year olds who won’t confess needing help from IVF, donor eggs, frozen eggs or all of the above? That infuriates me most.

Yup. I can respect the privacy, but don’t tell fibs.

I cannot relate to celebrity following – it strikes me as surreal and bizarre.

Its a complete facade, photos and lives doctored….its pure comedy.

I read the trash mags when I am setting for a hair cut, its always good for a laugh. Sex tapes?! what a desperate excuse for attention.

I do wish we as a culture would just STOP, stop buying into these fantasies. Emaciated models, pore-less skin and natural motherhood after 40. Riiiiiight. It makes me sad to think people are so desperate for an escape from their hum drum that they cling onto this crap.

I don’t buy those mags, read any celebrity anything (who cares?!), and TV watching is a rarity.

Not sure if you know about Guiliana and Bill Rancic who are being very public about their celebrity struggle with infertility. I don’t follow the story closely but what I’ve seen briefly is some extremely insensitive comments hurled at her in a very public way.

I’m very impressed that they are talking about their struggles while it’s happening and not after when it all worked out so perfectly….

I saw this on your blog. Part of me wanted to cheer that someone was talking about this so publicly, but I also cringed at the idea of putting themselves through such a traumatic experience in the public eye. And if it doesn’t work out for them? Ack!

It’s like the little dog as accessory fad. Only with babies.

I recently read that Chihuahua’s are now the most common breed found in shelters. That’s all I’m saying about that.
