On Monday I decided it was time to give up coffee and sugar. Needless to say, I have made no new friends this week.
I know that in the long run I will feel better without these edible crutches, but right now I just want to go back to bed and shut out the world.
Do you have vices you know you should drop? Or do you have something else you’d like to whine about today? You can put it all down here. Just don’t think I’m going to bother reading it. I’m much too crabby for that today.

Nope. Not giving up my vices. I don’t have any real bad ones like smoking or drugs. There is coffee, chocolate, some wine here and there. But sorry, not giving them up. None are affecting my health – at least not that I am aware of – so not giving them up. Besides that – I feel kind of entitled. Life didn’t give me some of the good stuff, so I’m keeping my bad stuff.

Here, Here! I totally agree. Life didn’t give you – at least one, really important thing, that pretty much the known world gets, by default. I think you are BEYOND entitled to keep any of the insignificant little vices you choose.

I really need to give up carbs thanks to PCOS, but that makes me very crabby and difficult to live with. Good luck giving up coffee, I’m not sure I could.

Why are you giving up coffee?? I have fibrocystic breasts and have read that coffee and chocolate makes the symptoms worse. And while TTCing several people mentioned that it was recommended to cut coffee out. I woke up this morning thinking I’d do just that… but didn’t… just had my morning expresso… I’m Cuban and I’ve been drinking it all of my life (we didn’t have any rules about kids not having coffee). It’s almost part of my identity so unless someone tells me it is going to kill me, I don’t think I could give it up. I neither drink, smoke nor do drugs. I can’t give up on carbs because I’m vegetarian… so I’ve already given up red meat, pork, chicken and fish. I rarely have the white stuff… stick to 100% whole wheat bread and pasta, and most of the time replace sugar with agave syrup, and yet I’m still overweight. But again, why drop coffee?

my ex gave up coffee and he used caffeine patches to deal with the withdrawl.

I agree with IrisD AND KateB. Why give up coffee OR sugar. Certainly not both. I think sugar gets a bad rap, apples are mostly sugar. A friend once told me that fructose is better for your body than sucrose (which table sugar is 50/50 of each) and that your body takes an “additional step” breaking down fructose, yet I could not find any online info supporting that. (so she won’t eat Gummi Bears, but she will eat those kid fruit snacks – that look and taste like, and have the same calories as Gummi Bears) To the contrary, if I remember correctly, is said that your body reacts to fructose and sucrose in the same way (American Diabetes Association website) if anything, it may be that fructose is slightly worse, which is what the whole hub-bub about high-fructose corn syrup is about. I think sugar is fine.

I think the only fructose that is good for our bodies is that from fruit, the others (from corn syrup, agave, etc.) break down too easily and contribute to being overweight and high cholesterol/triglycerides.
I’m on a special diet and have lost 8 pounds, so i’m thrilled but i’m still hungry and CRAVING sugar and bad stuff. These cravings are suppose to go away, but i’m beginning to have my doubts. Sigh. Grump. Grump.
Pretty much, anything that is pre-made or processed i’m giving up. I’m not sure we’ll even be able to eat out any more. I like eating out! However, i must say that our grocery bill and food in general (not eating out) are much more manageable. Sigh. Grump. Grump.

Well, remind me never to recruit you ladies for my cheering squad. You’re supposed to encourage good behaviors not talk me into even more vices! 🙂
The truth is I am just trying to clean out my system and trying to feel better. Trying to eat clean and healthy and see what happens. If I don’t feel better, I’ll take back all my old vices and maybe add a couple of new ones. 😉

We are just yanking your chain (I know that you know that). I read your post about giving up all this stuff to see if it helps your stomach problems. I hope it does. I don’t have stomach problems (thank God) just weight problems 🙂 but I have tried the caveman diet before and it did for me, what you are trying to achieve with your doctor’s recommendation. It made EVERYTHING better. All systems, across the board, improved. You just eat only what a cave man could eat. meats, fruits, veggies, basically. No foods that have to be “made” like butter, mayo, bread, table sugar. Of course no packaged (read: junk) foods. Sadly, no chocolate. There are lots of natural sweet things though. You could have honey, or gnaw on a stick of sugar cane if you wanted to. I just couldn’t stay on it because it caused me to have a Cheetos deficiency.

I tried switching to aspertame instead of sugar in my tea once. I started getting these weird headaches, so I went back to sugar.
